Tomb Raider Anime Series is in Development at Netflix
A Tomb Raider anime series is in development at Netflix that will take place after the Crystal Dynamics game trilogy. No release date is set.
In a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is developing a Tomb Raider anime series.
The series picks up after the events of Crystal Dynamics’ reboot trilogy. Tasha Huo, a writer on the upcoming Witcher: Blood Origin series, will write and executive produce the series. Additionally, Dmitri M. Johnson from dj2 Entertainment, Stephen Bugaj, Howard Bliss, and Jacob Robinson will be executive producers. Netflix is also developing an anime series based on 2017’s Kong: Skull Island.
This news comes a few days after Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green signed on as writer and director of a sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider movie. As THR points out, the upcoming anime wouldn’t crossover with the movie series. The movie starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft grossed $274.6 million worldwide. There’s no release date for the movie sequel.
Developer Crystal Dynamics’ first Tomb Raider game released in 2013. From there we received 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider and 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The trilogy serves as a reboot for the series. It later inspired the direction of the 2018 film starring Vikander. The first film was directed by Roar Uthaug.
The anime series isn’t the only in development at Netflix. They’re also developing The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an animated series. Additionally, Netflix cast actress Jodie Turner-Smith in The Witcher: Blood Origins, a six-episode miniseries set before 2018’s The Witcher show.
Currently, there’s no release date for the Tomb Raider anime series. In the meantime, you can play the Crystal Dynamics trilogy on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility
