Disco Elysium is Getting the TV Treatment From the Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Producers

A partnership between dj2 Entertainment and Disco Elysium developer ZA/UM will bring the game to TV sometime in the future

Video game TV adaptations have come a long way since the cursed days of The Super Mario Brothers Super Show. It may feel like a year now, but just six months ago we were all singing Toss a Coin to Your Witcher because of Netflix’s Witcher adaptation. And while we may not get another catchy tune out of it, another game-to-TV adaptation is on its way, this time, inspired by the wonderful world of Disco Elysium.

Revealed through an exclusive report from Variety, Disco Elysium‘s developer, ZA/UM is partnering with dj2 Entertainment to produce a show, although there’s not much more information available otherwise. This partnership seems to be in extremely early stages and has no writers or platforms attached as of yet. That’s not to say that executives from both sides aren’t excited about the partnership. Helen Hindpere, lead writer of ZA/Um is quoted in the feature as saying “We’re so gratified at the response ‘Disco Elysium’ has received, and very happy to be teaming with dj2 to expand the franchise for other media and new audiences.” Likewise, dj2 CEO and founder Dmitri M. Johnson stated “The Dj2 team is truly thrilled about this extraordinary opportunity to be part of it all.”

Now, while dj2 may not be a household name, the production company’s latest project certainly is: 2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog movie. Now, I know what you’re thinking, this has to be a bad thing because… well who can forget Sonic’s original face in that movie. If you saw it, it’s burned into your retinas, never to leave. But after its redesign, the Sonic The Hedgehog movie ended up being a blockbuster hit, leaving it as the highest-grossing movie based on a video game ever.

There’s still a lot of time to go until more about this project is unveiled. A team has to be assembled, a story has to be written, a cast has to be made, there’s a laundry list of things to do before we’ll see any Disco Elysium tv show. But as of right now, the project seems like it’s in good hands, and frankly, I’m excited to see what writers do with one of the best-received RPGs of last year.
